Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee will soon receive a technology hub under the National Mission of Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). It is one of the 25 centers set up by the Department of Science and Technology providing financial assistance. The hub, called iHub, will serve as a one-stop solution for 356 basic technologies. Out of the sanctioned grant of 135 crores for this, an amount of 7.25 crore has already been received. SRIC Dean of IIT Roorkee Prof. Manish Shrikhande stated that the hub is envisaged as a one-stop platform for cyber-physical systems and associated technologies. This step will help in knowledge sharing and cooperation, skill development of the workforce, and increase employment opportunities. Under the hub, IIT Roorkee will work with various national and international level academic and industrial partners to develop several CPS related products. These include an AI-powered multipurpose intelligent security and surveillance system with IIT Kanpur and McGill University Canada, a secure AI processor with Proficient Design LLC USA, collaboration with IIT Guwahati, Ritsumikin University Japan, and Involvement of cyber-physical platforms for prototyping microfluidic lab-on-chip in collaboration with National Cheng Kung University Taiwan and Johannes Kepler University Austria.
IHub will focus on ‘Device Technology and Material’ projects in seven application domains – Health Research, Defense Research and Development, Electronics and Information Technology, Housing and Urban Affairs, New and Renewable Energy, Telecommunication and Atomic Energy. IIT Roorkee head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Prof. Sudeb Dasgupta said that the cyber-physical system is the inclusion of advanced technologies. It will also create an ecosystem promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are a new group of engineered systems that integrate computing and physical processes in a dynamic environment. CPS includes Cybernetics, Mechatronics, Design and Embedded Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and many other technology areas.
