(Reuters) – The miniature motors that make iPhones buzz on silent helped power Japan’s Nidec to become a 1.5-trillion-yen ($14 billion) company.
In recent years, Nidec’s founder Shigenobu Nagamori has turned his attention to autos, and a technology which turns electricity stored in the battery into propulsion power.
This technology, called an e-axle or e-drive, is emerging as a new competitive front as the auto industry shifts to electric vehicles. By 2030, Nagamori says he wants a 35% slice of a global e-axle market that is forecast to be worth $20-30 billion a year by then, up from an estimated $2.8-$3 billion now.
He is betting that electric cars will follow the same route as room aircons, washing machines and computers, with key components, such as motor systems and central processing units, standardized and supplied by a few dominant tech firms.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden laid out his vision for manufacturing during a Monday stop in Toledo, vowing to emphasize union labor and make it easier for consumers to “move to the vehicles of the future.”
Biden spoke for about 25 minutes at a drive-in rally outside a United Auto Workers union hall in the Ohio city that borders Michigan 22 days before the Nov. 3 election. The former vice president touted his plans to create a network of 500,000 charging stations and offer rebates for those looking to swap out older vehicles for newer, more fuel-efficient ones — his version of the “cash for clunkers” program from President Barack Obama’s administration.
“We’re going to make it easier for American consumers to move to the vehicles of the future,” Biden said at one point.
“We’re going to move in a direction that technology is taking us and making sure the
As Amazon (AMZN) continues the expansion of its delivery fleet, the online retailer has revealed its electric delivery van developed in partnership with Rivian.
The all-electric vans have begun to arrive just a year after Amazon made a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040. The company has plans to take delivery of 100,000 electric vans from Rivian by 2030, with 10,000 expected to be on the roads by 2022.
The Rivian vans were developed to “enhance the driver experience and optimize safety” with a customized configuration that comes in three different models. The vans feature sensor detection, highway and traffic assist features, larger windshield, exterior cameras with digital display, Alexa integration, stronger door design, interior “dancefloor” for added space, multiple tail lights, and three levels of shelving to store packages.
“When we set out to create our first customized electric delivery vehicle with Rivian, we knew that it needed
The “Strategic Collaborations Towards Technology Development Transforming The Global Fuel Cell Vehicles Market, 2020 – 2030” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.
This study gives us a detailed analysis of the current and future scenarios of FCEV sales, stations, hydrogen fuel, and the push from governments for their adoption in regions like North America, Europe, China, Japan, and South Korea. It can be used to gain insights into OEM strategies in establishing a profitable supply chain and to track the various automotive trends and their impact on the FCEV market.
Cost, infrastructure, and safety are the few most important barriers for the growth in FCEV sales. Companies across the value chain and governments are working closely towards reducing the cost of the vehicle, hydrogen production and retail pricing, increasing the number of refueling stations and improving safety, and we can expect FCEVs to have price parity with traditional internal
Einride, the Swedish autonomous trucking startup, unveiled a new vehicle type that the company hopes to have on the road delivering freight starting in 2021. The vehicles, dubbed Autonomous Electric Transport (AET), came in four different variations. And much like Einride’s previous prototypes, they come without steering wheels, pedals, windshields, and, in general, no cab at all.
Einride has been in the business of releasing interesting, eye-catching prototype vehicles since it was founded in 2016. There was the cab-less T-Pod, released in 2017, four of which are operating on public roads hauling freight for Oatly, the Swedish food producer. A year later, the company unveiled the T-Log, built to be more powerful than its predecessor for the job of (you guessed it) hauling tons of giant tree logs. Now it has a next-generation vehicle that it hopes it can put into production.
Einride’s also been engaged with the less glamorous
The Senate Wednesday queried the Ministry of Science and Technology for giving out two vehicles worth N17 million to pay the debt of N2 million owned contractors.
The two vehicles with registration numbers are M50-101G and MGO-12FG respectively.

According to the Auditor General of the Federation, Anthony Ayine in the report submitted to the Committee, he said that during the verification of non-recurrent assets of the Ministry, it was discovered that two vehicles with registration M50-101G and MGO-12FG respectively were not seen and their whereabouts was not explained.
In his presentation, Director, Public Accounts in office of the Auditor General of the Federation, OAuGF, the two vehicles were seized by contractors.
Last week, California Governor Gavin Newson leaned over the hood of a Ford Mustang Mach-E and signed an executive order saying that all new passenger cars and trucks sold in the state must be emission-free by 2035.
Tesla delivered more vehicles than it has in any quarter to date between July and September. In its Q3 vehicle delivery and production report, Tesla said it shipped 139,300 vehicles during those three months.
That’s 45 percent more than the number of cars it delivered in the same quarter in 2019, and an increase of 53 percent from Q2 2020. Tesla’s previous shipment record was 112,000 vehicles in Q4 2019.
Breaking down the latest record-breaking shipment numbers, 15,200 of those were Model S/X cars and 124,100 were Model 3/Y deliveries. During the quarter, Tesla built 145,036 vehicles — 16,992 Model S/X vehicles and 128,044 Model 3/Y EVs.
At the start of the year, Tesla targeted 500,000 deliveries in 2020. It has shipped 318,000 vehicles so far. Its plans (just like everyone else’s on the planet) were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new Shanghai Gigafactory was closed briefly at the
Ford Motor Company has issued a recall of more than 700,000 of its vehicles in North America following an issue with their rearview cameras, which can suddenly go dark or show distorted images.
The recall applies to most 2020 versions of Ford’s F-Series trucks, the 2020 Explorer, Mustang, Transit, Expedition, Escape, Ranger and Edge, as well as the Lincoln Nautilus and Corsair, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
The company is unaware of any crashes or injuries caused by the latest issue, AP reported.
The problem was said to be caused by a poor electrical connection, the company noted in documents posted Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
