PC Sales Continue Surging — And That’s Good News for Intel, AMD and Others

PC sales remain on the upswing thanks to purchases made to support remote workers and learners. And it looks as if there’s still a lot of pent-up demand going into the holiday season.

Research firm IDC estimates PC shipments rose 14.6% annually in Q3 to 81.3 million. That compares with 11.2% shipment growth in Q2, and just 2.7% growth in 2019.

Officially, Gartner estimates PC shipments rose just 3.6% to 71.4 million. However, when including Chromebook sales (counted in IDC’s official estimate), Gartner’s estimate for shipment growth rises to 9%.

Along with Chromebooks, Q3 was a strong quarter for gaming PCs and (in certain cases) notebooks with cellular modems, according to IDC. On the flip side, desktop demand was said to be weak in the U.S. and EMEA. Desktop PC sales depend heavily on purchases made to support corporate offices, many of which are of course empty right now.

(Bloomberg) — Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is in advanced discussions to buy Xilinx Inc. in a takeover that could be valued at $30 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Xilinx Inc. shares surged the most in nearly a year Friday following a report from the Wall Street Journal that the San Jose-based tech group could be bought by its chipmaking rival Advanced Micro Devices. .

The Journal said the pair were in advanced merger talks that could value Xilinx at more than $30 billion, a 16% premium to the group’s closing price on Wall Street last night. Xilinx’s data-center chips have become much more valuable since the coronavirus pandemic triggered a surge in work-from-home dynamics that have pressured companies around the world to improve their technology and storage capabilities.

AMD Promises Major Desktop CPU Gains, Previews Next-Gen GPUs

While the clock speeds for AMD’s  (AMD) – Get Report latest desktop CPUs are similar to those of their predecessors, it promises architectural changes will deliver major performance gains.

And that in turn has major implications not only for AMD’s desktop offerings, but also upcoming notebook and server CPU refreshes.

AMD reveals Ryzen 5000-series chips with towering gaming performance

As promised, AMD is preparing to launch its next generation of Ryzen CPUs. These chips have the Zen 3 architecture, which reuses a lot of what makes the Zen 2 so speedy. But AMD’s engineers have made revisions that should lead to a significant performance gain. In a presentation today, AMD chief executive officer Lisa Su claimed that Zen 3 is 19% faster than the previous generation across a wide variety of workloads. I’ll test it to see if that’s the case, but AMD seems confident.

The Ryzen 5000-series CPUs begin rolling out November 5. This includes the $800 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, which boosts up to 4.9GHz and the $550 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X. For the slightly more mainstream chips, AMD also has the 8-core Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 5 5600X for $450 and $300, respectively.

AMD Targets PC Gamers With New Ryzen 5000 Desktop CPUs Arriving on Nov. 5

AMD’s new desktop CPUs, the Ryzen 5000 series, will start arriving on Nov. 5 with the goal of offering the best PC gaming performance. 

The main improvements involve the Zen 3 architecture, which is designed to boost the max clock speeds and increase the instructions per clock by 19 percent. The layout on the Ryzen chips has also been redesigned so that the cores have direct access to the L3 cache for lower latency, enabling faster PC gaming. 

“Zen 3 increases our overall lead in performance,” said AMD CEO Lisa Su during a Thursday event. “It increases our lead in power efficiency, and also now it delivers the best single-threaded performance and gaming performance as well.”
