As COVID-19 cases surged this spring, the pandemic led some people more than others to ponder their own mortality. A new study in China and the United States suggests that these people were the ones who showed the highest levels of stress and the least engagement at work.
But the research also uncovered a bright spot: The right kind of boss helped reduce stress and increase engagement and pro-social behavior in their workers who were anxious about COVID-19.
“A global pandemic can lead some people to think about their own mortality, which will understandably make them more stressed and less engaged at work,” said Jia (Jasmine) Hu, lead author of the study and associate professor of management and human resources at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.
“But business leaders who are attentive to employees’ emotional needs and unite them behind a common purpose made a positive difference
NBCUniversal ad boss Linda Yaccarino is taking on a larger role within the media conglomerate as global chairman of advertising and partnerships, the company announced on Monday.
The promotion, effective immediately, positions Yaccarino, who has been spearheading an initiative to create a single ad-buying system that spans TV and digital, to unite more parts of NBCU’s ad business.
Yaccarino previously was chairman of advertising and partnerships, managing the media company’s portfolio of linear networks like NBC, digital platforms like Peacock, distribution partnerships, and client relationships.
In her new role, she adds to her purview NBCU’s local ads, company-wide marketing strategies, and a new data-strategy team that she’s charged with building. She continues to report to CEO Jeff Shell.
As part of the change:
Local ads will be added to One Platform, NBCU’s all-in-one ad-buying system, which Yaccarino leads. The team that sells ads across NBCU’s local-TV stations and regional-sports networks,
From sourcing 2,000 laptops for computer-less staff to boosting remote working capacity 20-fold, Michael Gorriz spent the year at the center of a global bank’s scramble to cope with an office-emptying pandemic.
Standard Chartered Plc’s chief information officer had a ringside seat for the start of the crisis. While his bank is headquartered in London, the German-born Gorriz works from Singapore — a five-hour flight to Wuhan, the Chinese epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. StanChart’s branch in Wuhan was locked down, giving an early inkling of what life under Covid-19 might be like.
The pandemic drove thousands of older customers online for the first time, stress-testing technology for a company that’s bet heavily on digital banking. The Wuhan outbreak also gave Gorriz a unique perspective on enabling working from home at a time when the crisis still seemed remote in
Xbox Game Pass games can now be streamed through mobile devices thanks to xCloud, making it much easier than ever before to play The Master Chief Collection on the toilet. But this is just the start of Microsoft’s plans for streaming, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has indicated in a tweet that streaming will make its way to Game Pass on Xbox and PC, too.
Replying to a tweet asking directly whether Game Pass on console and PC would allow for streaming at some point–allowing users to demo a game before committing to a download–Spencer responded saying that they have a plan in the works for this. “It’s in the long list of cool things the xCloud team is working on, just a bit further down the list,” he said.
Yes, we want to do this. It’s in the long list of cool things the xCloud team is working on,
Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action RPG available for PS4, PC, and both Android and iOS devices. The game has managed to make a splash in the traditionally crowded fall season thanks in part to its The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-looking visuals and world.
In the video above, Max Blumenthal takes on one of Genshin Impact’s mini-bosses. In Genshin Impact, you play with a party of up to four characters, each of whom have control of the element of ice, fire, water, wind, electricity, or earth.
Genshin Impact has its detractors, largely because the game is driven by gacha mechanics. Gacha games are a lot like games that revolve around loot boxes in that they encourage players to use real-world money to buy in-game currency, which can then be spent to receive a random virtual item–in most cases (like Genshin Impact), a new character.
Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun paid $4.6 million for a charity dinner with Warren Buffett in January.
Sun hoped to convert Buffett into a Bitcoin fan, but instead one of his guests, eToro CEO Yoni Assia, embraced Buffett’s value-investing approach.
Assia read the definitive book on the subject written by Buffett’s mentor, hired a value-investing consultant, and became a bigger proponent of in-depth research and longer investment horizons, Bloomberg reported.
The boss of the social-trading platform also tweeted that value investing is a “hidden magic that reveals itself to you only after 20 years of making 15-20% and compounding it.”

Alexander Nix, CEO of Cambridge Analytica, center, arrives at the offices of Cambridge Analytica in central London, Britain, March 20, 2018.

LONDON — Alexander Nix, the former chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, has been banned from running limited companies in Britain for seven years.
The U.K. Insolvency Service announced the decision Thursday, saying Nix permitted companies to offer potentially unethical services to prospective clients. The 45-year-old, who lives in West London, has agreed not to take any holding company directorships from early next month.
Limited companies in the U.K. restrict the liability of the people that run them, and are similar to corporations in the U.S.
In addition to being a Cambridge Analytica director, the Eton-educated entrepreneur was also a director at parent company SCL Elections.
The Insolvency Service said the ban was issued on the basis that Nix caused or permitted SCL Elections to offer
One of the biggest gaming news stories of 2020 broke this week when Microsoft announced it would buy ZeniMax for $7.5 billion. People understandably have a lot of questions about the deal, and in particular, what it might mean for the future of ZeniMax and its subsidiary, Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently appeared on CNBC to discuss the deal. Asked directly if Microsoft would make any cuts to the company, Spencer replied, “Our plan is to leave it alone.”
“ZeniMax has an amazing track record of building great games. Our goal is to make ZeniMax the best ZeniMax they can be,” Spencer added. “Working individually with their studios on the great platform technology that we have and getting their creators’ feedback into the things we need to go build, that’s just a critical flywheel for us.”
