Chemists create new crystal form of insecticide, boosting its ability to fight mosquitoes and malaria — ScienceDaily

Through a simple process of heating and cooling, New York University researchers have created a new crystal form of deltamethrin — a common insecticide used to control malaria — resulting in an insecticide that is up to 12 times more effective against mosquitoes than the existing form.

The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), may provide a much-needed and affordable insecticide alternative in the face of growing resistance among mosquitoes.

“The use of more active crystal forms of insecticides is a simple and powerful strategy for improving commercially available compounds for malaria control, circumventing the need for developing new products in the ongoing fight against mosquito-borne diseases,” said Bart Kahr, professor of chemistry at NYU and one of the study’s senior authors.

Spark and NNNCo team up to create a roaming trans-Tasman LoRaWAN network

New Zealand telco Spark and Australian IoT network builder National Narrowband Network Co (NNNCo) announced an agreement on Monday that will allow LoRaWAN users to deploy on either side of the Tasman and roam on the other side of the ditch.

In order to implement the roaming arrangement, NNNCo’s enterprise platform, N2N-DL, has been integrated into Spark’s network core.

“Data from devices on the Spark NZ network will feed into N2N-DL giving customers access to data on a single platform from devices enrolled in either country,” the pair said.

“Spark can also do the same for customers with devices enrolled on the NNNCo network in Australia.”

One of the first customers of the network will be Parkable, a New Zealand parking app that is looking to expand in Australia.

Electricity generation is forecast to increasingly move away from traditional structures involving large fossil fuel-burning power plants, towards localized systems using renewable energy and battery storage, known as distributed energy.

LONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Britain’s Octopus Energy plans to double its workforce by the end of 2021 and launch a new technology hub in Manchester in the northwest of England, creating around 1,000 jobs, it said on Monday.

The move comes as economists warn of the stark impact of coronavirus-related restrictions on the economy, with the Bank of England expecting a jump in the jobless rate to 7.5% as measures to support jobs ease.

“These 1,000 jobs will provide exciting opportunities across the country for those who want to be at the cutting edge of the green revolution,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement from the company.

The new jobs will also be spread across existing sites in London, Brighton, Warwick and Leicester and will primarily go to graduates, the company said.
