Autopsy, airway suctioning and cardiopulmonary resuscitation are among the list of medical procedures that pose a risk of spreading COVID-19 from a patient to their health-care provider by creating aerosols, according to new research published in the journal BMJ Open Respiratory Research by an international team of experts including occupational health, preventive medicine and infectious disease specialists.
The team, led by University of Alberta medicine professor Sebastian Straube, carried out a systematic review of public health guidelines, research papers and policy documents from around the globe to determine which procedures are classified as aerosol-generating.
“What we sought to do was to understand which procedures generate aerosols and therefore require a higher grade of personal protective equipment,” said Straube, who also heads the preventive medicine division of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Port Arthur saw two large air releases in four days from major companies experiencing issues with equipment at their sites.
The first occurred midmorning on Sept. 19 when crews at the Total Port Arthur Refinery discovered a leak at a storage tank in its tank farm that was leaking material.
In a self-reported notice to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Total estimated that almost 700 pounds of unspecified volatile organic compounds had been released during the nine-hour event.
VOCs are compounds usually found in burning fuels and are considered dangerous to human health.
The company reported that the leak was repaired and the site was cleaned by 7 p.m.
In an email, representatives from Total said the company had no further comment about the incident.

The Traton Group and TuSimple recently announced a global partnership to develop self-driving trucks. Traton is the parent company of MAN, Scania, and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus heavy-duty commercial truck brands.
The two companies have launched a development program to operate the first SAE level 4 autonomous hub-to-hub route between Södertälje to Jönköping in Sweden using Scania trucks. As part of the partnership, Traton has also taken a minority stake in TuSimple.
