Homeland Security Funds 5 New Projects Exploring Blockchain Technology

The Homeland Security Department tapped one U.S.-based and four international blockchain companies to explore the emerging, record-keeping technology’s potential to help refresh how the agency conducts operations.

The five startups were selected to receive phase I awards amounting to more than $800,000 collectively through the DHS Science and Technology Directorate’s Silicon Valley Innovation Program, or SVIP. Their work could eventually lead to the potential production of a Social Security number alternative that won’t divulge personally identifiable information, extend the agency and its subcomponents’ visibility into multiple supply chains—and more.

Homeland Security leverages SVIP to invest in technological solutions that can be rapidly prototyped, and holds promise to modernize its own capabilities. Blockchain is a contemporary technology that tracks, records and authenticates information and transactions. Recognizing the burgeoning tech’s potential to transform its internal pursuits, the department launched a “Preventing Forgery and Counterfeiting of Certificates and Licenses” solicitation in 2018 calling

Exploring the effect of rainfall on pine needles may lead to future fibers that are extremely water-repellent. — ScienceDaily

If you have ever hiked in the woods and been surrounded by the sight and smell of pine trees, you may have taken a closer look at pine needles and wondered how their shape, material properties, and surface wettability are all influenced by rainfall.

In Physics of Fluids, from AIP Publishing, researchers at the University of Central Florida are currently probing how well pine needles allay the impact of rain beneath the tree. Andrew K. Dickerson and Amy P. Lebanoff explored the impact of raindrops onto fixed, noncircular fibers of Pinus palustris, aka the longleaf pine, by using high-speed videography to capture the results.

“Drops impacting fixed fibers are greatly deformed and split apart,” said Dickerson. “As expected, the breakup of the drop and the force felt by the fiber is dependent on drop size and speed.”

Impact force and the shape of the resulting lobe of water also

Council Post: Building For The Future: Exploring Mobile App Approaches

Max Lynch, Co-Founder & CEO at Ionic.

In today’s uncertain environment, it’s not unusual for management to feel powerless over factors outside of their control. Many industries are paralyzed in a “wait and see” posture, a precarious position for business leaders. However, mobile app spending and installs are thriving, and they grew significantly during the first half of 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the first half of 2020, worldwide spending across app stores netted $50.1 billion — an increase of 23.4% from the first half of 2019. First-time app installs are up 26.1% year over year in 2020, reaching 71.5 billion downloads. Though mobile was poised to set new records in 2020 ahead of the onset of Covid-19, uncertainty has leaders using this moment to reevaluate their operations. Regardless, mobile is on the rise, and as I discussed previously, the numbers prove that mobile apps are no longer

Video service Quibi exploring ‘strategic options’ including possible sale

Recently launched streaming service Quibi is reportedly exploring “strategic options,” including the possibility of a sale, as it struggles to hit initial subscriber targets.

The short-form video service, started by Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, first launched in April. Since then, however, the service has reportedly struggled to bring in subscribers in a crowded market.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the service is exploring a variety of options. That could include a sale, raising more money, or going public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company.

Quibi launched in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The company is likely to miss its initial paid subscriber target by a large margin, and is also facing a patent lawsuit.

The show’s main differentiator was short-form video content that was optimized for mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad. Thus far, that format has apparently left consumers unswayed.

Quibi declined
