If any animal understands the horrors of trench warfare, it has to be the mole. Faced with an enemy, there’s no time for pleasantries. No place to hide. Aggression is all that matters.
To help them fight in this brutal world, evolution has granted the female mole a generous dose of ‘roid rage’ by tacking some testicles onto her ovaries – resulting in a unique bit of anatomy called an ovotestis.
Now, researchers have a better understanding of how this fascinating biological change came about.
“At a certain point, sexual development usually progresses in one direction or another, male or female. We wanted to know how evolution modulates this sequence of developmental events, enabling the intersexual features that
As countries anticipate the second wave of Covid-19, recently published research provides evidence to show that countries with female leaders performed better on two significant counts; a lower number of positive Covid-19 cases and a lower number of Covid-19 related deaths. The authors of the research from the Universities of Reading and Liverpool, compared data using 194 countries dataset. Their data
Female surgeons at a large academic medical center perform less complex surgical procedures than their male counterparts, according to a new study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). This study, published in Annals of Surgery, is one of the first to measure the problem of underemployment among female surgeons in the United States, which can affect compensation, career advancement and job satisfaction.
Only about one in five surgeons practicing in U.S. is female. Unemployment is virtually nonexistent among surgeons, but many female surgeons, as well as professional women in other fields, experience underemployment — the underuse of skills — according to the Federal Reserve Bank. “Women in surgery talk among themselves about how they may be perceived as less confident or competent, and for those reasons they may have less opportunity to do exciting and challenging cases,” says Cassandra Kelleher, MD, a pediatric surgeon at MGH and senior
Scientists have discovered a gynandromorphic (two-sexed) bird in a Pennsylvania nature reserve.
The bird displays an even split down the middle between male and female feather coloring, leaving researchers to label it a “unicorn.”
The bird is likely a product of a genetic anomaly, but it’s perfectly healthy.
Every once in a while, a genetic anomaly will occur in the animal world that blows scientists’ minds. Take, for example, the exotic bird in the image above. It’s “gynandromorphic,” which means a specimen containing both female and male characteristics that can sometimes be seen in physical traits on the body.
🦅 You love badass animals. So do we. Let’s nerd out over them together.
Meet the rose-breasted grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus), which displays an even split down the middle between male and female feather coloring. The bird’s right side shows red plumage (male), while and its left

Oluwakemi Dauda, a 20-year-old University of Michigan student, isn’t easily satisfied. When she noticed that her high school was lacking teachers and resources, so much so that the ceiling was rotting away, she took matters into her own hands and registered for a computer application class and sought support from non-profit education organization NAF to supplement her education.
That led her to create Steps to Success, an educational app for young children with severe literacy issues in Detroit. When she launched the tool in 2015, 50% of adults in Detroit were considered “functionally illiterate.”
Dauda is one of 10 women from around the world featured in New Realities,

On Monday, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think tank that researches extremism, released some timely data showing that some of the same politicians calling out Twitter’s inaction are indeed facing more attacks online than other politicians.
The study: Researchers collected publicly tagged mentions on Twitter and Facebook for a handful of politicians for two weeks in June and July, scrutinizing them manually and using AI to identify abusive posts.
Overall, researchers found that women and people of color were “far more likely than men to be abused on Twitter.” They found that women received an average of 12% more abuse on Facebook than male politicians. Between 5% and 10% of mentions of most male politicians were considered abusive, while mentions of female politicians on Twitter contained abuse between 15% and 39% of the time.
Overall, women were targeted much more personally by the tweets in the study. While

Science and Technology institutes will be rated based on the support they give to female staff under the new Science Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP), 2020, that aims to make the arena more inclusive and diverse.
Besides stressing on support to female staff, the focus of ranking parameters will also be language and geographical locations.
“There will be a separate chapter on equity, inclusion and diversity in the new science policy,” Department of Science and Technology (DST) Secretary Ashutosh Sharma said.
Deliberations are underway to have a new STIP 2020 which is expected to be unveiled by December, he said. Both government and private institutions will be graded.
