Fuels, not fire weather, control carbon emissions in boreal forest

Fuels, not fire weather, control carbon emissions in boreal forest
Rockets represent carbon stored in wood, trees, and soil in four main boreal forest regions. Though fire weather helps “ignite” the rockets, the amount of emissions each forest can produce is determined by fuel load (soil layers) and flammability (soil moisture). As climate warming stokes longer fire seasons and more severe fires in the North American boreal forest, being able to calculate how much carbon each fire burns grows more urgent. New research led by Northern Arizona University and published this week in Nature Climate Change suggests that how much carbon burns depends more on available fuels than on fire weather such as drought conditions, temperature, or rain. In a large retrospective study that stretched across Canada and Alaska, the international team of researchers found that the carbon stored belowground in soil organic matter was the most important predictor of how

Google Comes Under Fire Abroad as U.S. Prepares Antitrust Case

(Bloomberg) — Google is confronting a growing backlash against its market power in international markets, compounding the company’s regulatory challenges as it girds for an historic antitrust suit from the U.S. Justice Dept.

In just a matter of weeks, the search giant’s business practices have drawn scrutiny in Australia, South Korea and India. The European Union’s antitrust chief has already threatened to break up Google if it won’t change its ways, while the company pulled out of China a decade ago because of government censorship.

India is a prime example of how Google’s troubles could undercut future growth. More than 200 startup founders have banded together and opened discussions with the government to stop the Alphabet Inc. unit from imposing a 30% fee on smartphone app purchases, its standard levy around the world. While Google delayed implementation for six months after an outcry last week, the country’s tech

Google

Streaming device shoppers now have another way to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney Plus and thousands of other apps on their TVs. It’s called Google TV, and it’s coming first to the aptly named Chromecast with Google TV, available now for $50 (£60, AU$99).

Google TV is the successor to Android TV, a streaming platform that’s significantly less popular than Roku and Amazon Fire TV, which together made up 70% of all the streaming devices installed in the US last year. Android TV is found today on a handful of devices in the US — namely the Nvidia ShieldTiVo Stream 4K and smart TVs from Sony, Hisense and TCL — but in terms of popularity and reviews, it lags far behind its rivals.

Technology and apps you need when an earthquake or fire strikes the Bay Area

Power blackouts and poorly-thought-out evacuation alert systems have left Californians without critical information during natural disasters in the past.

But there are some free apps for your phone, numbers to text, systems to register for and technology to buy that could ensure that you have the most accurate and up-to-date information when disaster strikes, even during a power blackout.

To best ensure you get critical information when you most need it, it’s best to choose a diverse range of disaster preparedness technology options in case any one particular solution fails. The Federal Emergency Management Agency also reminds people that mobile networks can become overwhelmed in a crisis, and it is often easier to receive information via text than over a phone call or on an app during those times.

All of these apps are available for iOS in the Apple App Store or Android in the Google Play store unless

Roku is bringing its Roku Channel to Amazon Fire TV, which makes sense

The Roku Channel, Roku’s free streaming service that offers more than 100,000 ad-supported titles and 115 live TV channels, is now available to Amazon Fire TV users, the company announced today. And while it may seem odd that The Roku Channel would live on Fire TV devices — Amazon and Roku are direct competitors in set-top-box hardware — it might actually make a lot of sense.

Neither Amazon nor Roku truly rely on hardware sales to boost their TV brands. Amazon’s gadgets have always been a gateway to Amazon’s services, and the company may just need more content to offer its Fire TV on top of its existing channels. Meanwhile, Roku makes the majority of its revenue through advertising and subscriptions, which is a big part of why it took so long for NBCUniversal’s Peacock to roll out on Roku. It makes sense that the company would want to make

California’s August Complex largest fire in state’s history — ScienceDaily

NOAA/NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite captured another startling image of the August Complex of fires that has grown to over 1,000,000 acres burned (1,006,140 acres total) and because of that grim milestone the complex has been dubbed a “gigafire.” The August Complex is only 58% contained. Inciweb reports that: “In the northeast zone, active behavior continues. Structures in Hidden Valley, Trinity Pines/Post Mountain, Wildwood and Platina are threatened by fire spread. Short range spotting and fire spread toward Hidden Valley has increased potential for impact to structures.”

Another view that can be captured by Suomi NPP satellite is a false-color image. The false-color image is collected by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument suite using corrected reflectance bands. Burned areas or fire-affected areas are characterized by deposits of charcoal and ash, removal of vegetation and/or the alteration of vegetation structure. When bare soil becomes exposed, the brightness in Band

New Amazon Prime Day Early Deals: 4K Fire TVs, Kindle Devices, And More

Amazon has kicked off another small batch of early Prime Day deals ahead of the main event on October 13. The 48-hour deals bonanza for Prime members had been delayed multiple times this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. With only one week left to go until Amazon Prime Day 2020 officially begins, the company is building hype with a batch of early Prime Day 2020 deals to help you start saving right now.

This is the second week of early Prime Day deals. Last week, Amazon discounted a 4K TV, the Echo Dot, and the Fire TV Recast. Though those deals have ended, you can now save on a trio of 4K Fire TVs, the Kindle Paperwhite, and more. Considering the first TV deal sold out fairly quickly last week, these deals will likely sell out before they officially end on October 12. All Prime Day deals are exclusive
