With New STEM MBA Path, Foster Puts Out Welcome Mat For Foreign Students

Most top-25 schools that added or extended application rounds this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic saw big benefits in the form of increased MBA applications; many parlayed the deeper talent pool into bigger classes. Not so at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business in Seattle. Though the Foster School did add a fourth round this year extending more than two months from March 17 to May 19, the app windfall never arrived: Foster’s app total for the cycle was 833, three fewer than it received in 2018-2019.

Cheating birds mimic host nestlings to deceive foster parents — ScienceDaily

The common cuckoo is known for its deceitful nesting behaviour — by laying eggs in the nests of other bird species, it fools host parents into rearing cuckoo chicks alongside their own. While common cuckoos mimic their host’s eggs, new research has revealed that a group of parasitic finch species in Africa have evolved to mimic their host’s chicks — and with astonishing accuracy. The study is published in the journal Evolution.

Working in the savannahs of Zambia, a team of international researchers collected images, sounds and videos over four years to reveal a striking and highly specialised form of mimicry. They focused on a group of finches occurring across much of Africa called the indigobirds and whydahs, of the genus Vidua.

Telecommunications are becoming increasingly crucial to our society, economy and security. ESA is supporting the European satellite communication industry’s efforts to identify how to meet future worldwide demands for more secure and resilient digital systems.


Earlier this month ESA initiated two parallel studies to envisage the shape of the future secure telecommunications market and to clarify which solutions and disruptive technologies will be needed.

The results will inform work undertaken between 2021 and 2023 as part of its program of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems. This will enable ESA to help European and Canadian industry to prosper in the highly competitive global market for secure satellite communications.
