Another year, another iPhone. (Did I say that last year?) This is the iPhone’s last year of tweendom before it hits teenhood: Apple announced its four-model iPhone 12 line on Tuesday, the first major revamp of the iPhone’s design since 2017’s iPhone X, which introduced face unlocking and better screen technology. This year they sport an array of colors, more models and 5G wireless support across the lineup. In addition to the HomePod Mini smart speaker, we were treated to the MagSafe wireless charging system for the iPhone and a stealth release of the $50 Beats Flex wireless headphones.
Here’s how you order iPhone 12, Mini, Pro and Pro Max models, on different days and at different prices.
Apple’s latest iPhone 12 models are the first to feature 5G connectivity, but access to ultra-fast mmWave bands are limited to customers in the U.S.
Support for speedy 5G connectivity was a central selling point when Apple announced the new handsets on Tuesday. According to a support document, however, access to bands that offer the greatest data transfer potential are limited to certain models.
As noted by Apple, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone mini integrate Qualcomm radios compatible with the n260 and n261 bands, which operate at 39GHz and 28GHz, respectively. Known as mmWave, these high-frequency bands feature wavelengths that can be measured in millimeters instead of centimeters or larger, and provide ample data transfer capability with bandwidths exceeding 3GHz.
While Apple’s 5G-compatible iPhones support a wide range of bands, including those that operate in the robust sub-6GHz spectrum, mmWave is restricted

As disclosed on the specs page for Apple’s new HomePod mini, the diminutive speaker is Apple’s first to support Thread networking technology.
Thread is a low-power IP-based networking technology for connecting Internet of Things (IoT) devices, offering a secure, mesh-based system that makes it easy to build an ecosystem of devices.
While Thread is essentially agnostic to the application layers that run on top of it, it can support multiple layers and may play a role in Project Connected Home over IP, the alliance of Apple, Amazon, Google, and other companies that is seeking to make it simpler to build devices compatible with multiple ecosystems such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
For the time being, however, Apple says in a footnote that HomePod mini’s Thread support is limited to HomeKit devices, so the technology can’t yet be leveraged cross-platform and it remains to be seen how Apple will embrace
Apple introduced the world to the iPhone 12 on Tuesday, unveiling four new models launching starting later this month, during a virtual event held at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.
The tech giant said the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available for preorder this Friday, and launch Oct. 23. The larger iPhone 12 Pro Max and smaller iPhone 12 Mini will be available to preorder Nov. 6, and launch Nov. 13.
Prices range from starting at $699 for the iPhone 12 Mini to starting at $1,099 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro will start at $999, while the standard iPhone 12 starts at $799.
The smartphones also mark Apple’s debut in 5G, the next wireless service expected to deliver major upgrades in speed and connectivity.

Apple showed off its new iPhone, the first with 5G, along with a new HomePod Mini device at its much-anticipated event on Tuesday.
Apple’s first product unveiling was its new HomePod Mini, a smaller version of the company’s smart speaker that competes with Amazon’s Echo. HomePod Mini has iPhone integration; features “computational audio”; and recognizes multiple voices. It ships the week of Nov. 16 and retails at $99.
Next up was the iPhone. “Today is the beginning of a new era for iPhone,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said, highlighting new 5G features and benefits such as faster speeds and lower latency. Cook invited Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg on stage to talk about the benefits of the carrier’s 5G network, which is available nationwide today.
Apple then showed off the new iPhone 12, the first iPhone with 5G, starting at $799.
Similarly, it includes Apple’s new “ceramic shield” technology, which the company claims makes the phone four times more drop-resistant than the iPhone 11. Rounding out the phone’s protection is IP68 water and dust resistance. Like all the other iPhone 12 models Apple announced today, the mini also comes with 5G connectivity. US variants of the handset will ship with mmWave antenna modules, allowing them to take advantage of Verizon’s Ultra Wideband network.
The iPhone 12 mini will start at $699, and will be available in five colors: blue, green, black, white and (Product) Red. Pre-orders open on Friday, November 6th, with general availability beginning on November 13th.
It’s been a while since Apple has gone out of its way to offer a small phone to its customers. Since the iPhone 6 in 2014, the company’s devices, like that of most of its competitors, have gotten bigger and bigger. The 2016
Although some of the wind was taken out of its sails by way of a leak, the Apple event has delivered the official word on the new line of iPhone 12 devices, which will sport 5G functionality that Apple says will be beneficial for gaming.
iPhone 12
Apple started out by showcasing the iPhone 12. It has smooth, flat edges and a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, with twice as many pixels as iPhone 11. Apple claims this will lead to better-looking photos, sharper text, and higher brightness. The physical size of the device is 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11. iPhone 12 is said to offer tougher smartphone glass than any other phone, making it the most durable on the market. Apple heavily touted the phone’s 5G support (more on that below), though it noted that peak speeds of up to 4Gbps will
