A major hack that compromised Uganda’s mobile money network has plunged the country’s telecoms and banking sectors into crisis.
The Oct. 3 hack was a result of a security breach on a consumer finance aggregator, Pegasus Technologies, which mainly affected bank to mobile wallet transfers, according to an Oct. 8 statement by MTN Uganda, the country’s largest mobile phone company. Kampala-based Pegasus Technologies provides financial and billing solutions for various companies including all the affected entities.
At least $3.2 million is estimated to have been stolen in this latest incident with some reports quoting a much higher figure. The hackers used around 2,000 mobile SIM cards to gain access to the mobile money payment system, according to local papers. They then instructed the banks to transfer millions of dollars to telecommunication companies who then paid out mobile money to these different SIM cards across the country.
Zhiyun has released another accessory, the Smooth-XS smartphone gimbal, for those who regularly use mobile content in their business or for leisure. How does it compare?
Gimbals are increasingly becoming a natural choice of kit investment not just for professionals creating commercial content with camera bodies but also for those who want to create more polished mobile content for social media, either to supplement an existing business with quick but sleek-looking content or for personal leisure, such as family or travel memories.
This is where smartphone gimbals come into play, and I got to review the Zhiyun Smooth-XS, which is aimed at users looking to create content on the go.
Smooth-XS is a compact and lightweight smartphone gimbal that comes in four different colors. Coated with anti-slip rubber, the grip is comfortable to hold. It measures 69 mm in length, 56 mm in width, and 267 mm in height.
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — A City Council member is urging New York to embrace new technology for voting in future elections.
Councilman Ritchie Torres was joined by Mobile Voting Project founder Bradley Tusk at a press conference Friday to call for the New York State Board of Election to enact mobile voting.
With less than three weeks until Election Day, it comes on the heels of a recent incident wherein the New York City Board of Elections mistakenly mailed out as many as 100,000 faulty ballots in Brooklyn alone and just weeks after President Donald Trump’s administration sought to gut the United States Postal Service to hamper mail-in ballot turnout.

Torres said studies show that the U.S. trails most developed countries in voter turnout.

Mobile games are thriving as players turn to them for fun and friendship during the pandemic, with increasing numbers of women joining the trend.
“Being stuck at home has not stopped people from playing games on their phones,” said SensorTower mobile insights strategist Craig Chapple. “To the contrary, mobile gaming is more popular than ever.”
Smartphone game play involves taps on touchscreens with just a few moments of play at a time, often while sipping coffee or waiting for transit, in contrast to the console games with immersive worlds that can span hours.
Mobile games appeal to a broader demographic than do shooters and other genres popular on console or PC gamers.
More than 40 percent of mobile gamers are women, according to research firms Newzoo and Statista. That differs from gamers using consoles or personal computers, who are more likely to be males age 12 to 35 years old,
UBS Arena planners want to ensure most of the physical contact in the under-construction building at Belmont Park will take place on the ice during Islanders games.
The COVID-19 pandemic has radically refocused thinking on health and safety protocols, and UBS Arena will prioritize mobile technology to reduce “touch points.”
“We have a chance to build into the original fabric of our arena various things that will keep our fans safe and sound,” Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky said on a webinar released on Thursday detailing some of the health and safety precautions being designed in conjunction with arena sponsor Northwell Health and developer Oak View Group.
“The most important thing we’re facing off against is the comfort of home and being on the sofa,” Ledecky said. “We have to give a reason for the customer to come out and come to UBS Arena. We have to make sure that the
Xbox cloud gaming launched last month with a lineup of more than 170 games. Now, anyone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription automatically has access to Xbox cloud gaming (otherwise known as Project xCloud) and can play Xbox games on their Android smartphone or tablet. However, you’ll need a phone controller if you want to experience cloud gaming, and there are a lot of different choices to consider, from official pads that require mobile controller clips to third-party ones that don’t. Thankfully, some of the best Xbox One controllers are compatible with Android devices, and there are a lot of other great cloud gaming controller options as well.
That’s why we’ve tested and identified our picks for the best xCloud controller for use for Xbox cloud gaming on our Android phones. Each of the following controllers provides a unique but great experience, and it can be hard to tell
As part of an international collaboration, Aalto University researchers have shown that our common understanding of what attracts visual attention to screens, in fact, does not transfer to mobile applications. Despite the widespread use of mobile phones and tablets in our everyday lives, this is the first study to empirically test how users’ eyes follow commonly used mobile app elements.
Previous work on what attracts visual attention, or visual saliency, has centered on desktop and web-interfaces.
‘Apps appear differently on a phone than on a desktop computer or browser: they’re on a smaller screen which simply fits fewer elements and, instead of a horizontal view, mobile devices typically use a vertical layout. Until now it was unclear how these factors would affect how apps actually attract our eyes,’ explains Aalto University Professor Antti Oulasvirta.
In the study, the research team used a large set of representative mobile interfaces and eye
Oct. 6 (UPI) — The European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that member states cannot collect mobile and Internet data en masse, saying it’s illegal to gather such “general and indiscriminate information.”
The court ruling answered several cases brought by Privacy International and La Quadrature du Net.
Austrian privacy advocate Max Schrems had filed a lawsuit based on work by whistle-blower Edward Snowden that showed the United States doesn’t offer sufficient protection against surveillance by public authorities. His lawsuit opened the initial inquiry that lead to Tuesday’s decision.
“EU law precludes national legislation requiring a provider of electronic communications services to carry out the general and indiscriminate transmission or retention of traffic data and location data for the purpose of combating crime in general or of safeguarding national security,” the court said in a statement.
The court ruled in recent years that prevailing EU law bars member states from mandating
A future-proof security model for a modern, mobile government
The shift to telework has required many federal agencies to consider new security approaches to fill in the gaps between traditional network-centric security that is not built to scale to a dynamic telework environment, the IT network architecture, and various cloud architectures.
To address these complexity and cybersecurity issues, agencies are turning to policies including CISA’s Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) 3.0 that provide guidance on reducing risks and enabling secure connections to government networks.
TIC 3.0 opens the door for modern, hybrid cloud environments, and provides agencies with greater flexibility. Rather than focusing on a physical network perimeter that no longer exists, the guidance recommends considering each zone within an agency environment to ensure baseline security across dispersed networks. As agencies continue to support a remote and distributed workforce, this security approach will be critically important.
