  • A former Apple App Store director claimed Apple doesn’t want competition for its own Arcade service

Microsoft could bring its Xbox Game Pass to Apple devices by 2021, according to a new report.

Microsoft Reportedly Bringing Xbox Game Pass To iOS As Browser App

Microsoft’s gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees that the company is planning to bring Xbox Game Pass streaming to Apple’s iPad and iPhone devices using a “direct browser-based solution,” according to a Business Insider report.

“We absolutely will end up on iOS,” Spencer reportedly told employees this week. According to The Verge, Spencer also mentioned bringing this browser solution to Windows 10 PCs next year.

Microsoft’s game-streaming portion of Xbox Game Pass has so far only been available on Android as Apple at first blocked it and similar services such as Google Stadia, but then agreed to allow those apps onto its iOS devices provided that there were separate apps for each game. Apple also required that each game be submitted individually so that it would comply with the company’s 30% profit-splitting policy.

Microsoft declined to participate, calling the solution a “bad experience for customers” as it wanted all of

Microsoft is developing an iOS app to bring Game Pass to the iPad and iPhone, circumventing Apple App Store rules, Business Insider reported Thursday.

“We absolutely will end up on iOS,” Microsoft gaming boss Phil Spencer told employees at an all-hands meeting Wednesday, according to Business Insider.

Microsoft announced in August that its Project xCloud video game service would be released September for free to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. The service gives people access to more than 100 games on the Xbox or PC, as well as its Xbox Live gaming social network.

Microsoft said at the time that devices powered by Google’s Android operating system would be supported but said Apple was blocking its

Xbox Boss Says Game Pass Streaming Planned For PC And Consoles, Too

Xbox Game Pass games can now be streamed through mobile devices thanks to xCloud, making it much easier than ever before to play The Master Chief Collection on the toilet. But this is just the start of Microsoft’s plans for streaming, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has indicated in a tweet that streaming will make its way to Game Pass on Xbox and PC, too.

Replying to a tweet asking directly whether Game Pass on console and PC would allow for streaming at some point–allowing users to demo a game before committing to a download–Spencer responded saying that they have a plan in the works for this. “It’s in the long list of cool things the xCloud team is working on, just a bit further down the list,” he said.

  • Apple’s iPhone and iPad App Store doesn’t allow subscription-based gaming services like Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and Google’s Stadia.
  • The reason, according to former Apple App Store director Phil Shoemaker, is because “apps that compete against Apple’s services have a track record of problems getting through the App Store’s review process,” a new House antitrust report said.
  • Shoemaker pointed to Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription-based gaming service, as a primary reason other game subscription services aren’t available for iPhone and iPad users.
  • “Apple’s gaming service, Apple Arcade, is a type of app that was ‘consistently disallowed from the store,’ when offered by third-party developers,” the report said, “but Apple allowed its own app in the store ‘even though it violates existing [App Store] guidelines.’”
  • Apple maintains that any game on a subscription service is subject to the same App Store approval process that an

EA Play comes to Game Pass PC in December

EA Play is becoming part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on November 10 alongside the launch of Xbox Series X – but that addition only applies on console. On PC, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer for EA Play, as Microsoft has confirmed that it’ll get bundled up with the home computer library in December.

EA Play will be available through all PC flavours of Xbox Game Pass in December. That includes both the basic $9.99 / £7.99 Xbox Game Pass PC subscription, and the $14.99 / £10.99 Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bundle, which includes both PC and console Game Pass, Xbox Live Gold, and access to xCloud streaming services.

It’s important to note that EA Play is $4.99 and only includes access to the publisher’s vault of older titles, like Titanfall 2, the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, and older Battlefield and EA Sports titles.

Here’s what’s coming to Xbox Game Pass in the first half of October:

  • DOOM EternalOctober 1 (Android, Xbox Game Pass for Console, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate)
