Spectrum Health completes 200th diagnostic procedure for lung conditions using robotic technology

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Spectrum Health physicians recently completed their 200th procedure using robotic technology to diagnose early-stage lung cancers, officials say.

The integrated health system’s use of a robotic bronchoscopy platform has resulted in the diagnosis of 20 percent more cases, according to an Oct. 12 news release. This improves patient outcomes by providing access to earlier treatment options with more accuracy.

Two years ago, Spectrum Health introduced Auris Health’s Monarch Platform, an innovative endoscopy tool. More recently, physicians have combined this with Phillips’ Cone Beam CT technology and augmented fluoroscopy to help diagnose with high precision.

“We are equipped with the two leading technologies in the market. By combining these two highly innovative technologies it will allow us to reach any area of concern with unprecedented accuracy,” said Dr. Gustavo Cumbo-Nacheli, director of bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonology for Spectrum Health.

“Soon we will have the ability not only

Using robotic assistance to make colonoscopy kinder and easier — ScienceDaily

Scientists have made a breakthrough in their work to develop semi-autonomous colonoscopy, using a robot to guide a medical device into the body.

The milestone brings closer the prospect of an intelligent robotic system being able to guide instruments to precise locations in the body to take biopsies or allow internal tissues to be examined.

A doctor or nurse would still be on hand to make clinical decisions but the demanding task of manipulating the device is offloaded to a robotic system.

The latest findings — ‘Enabling the future of colonoscopy with intelligent and autonomous magnetic manipulation’ — is the culmination of 12 years of research by an international team of scientists led by the University of Leeds.

The research is published today (Monday, 12 October) in the scientific journal Nature Machine Intelligence

Patient trials using the system could begin next year or in early 2022.

First U.S. robotic moon lander since Apollo era planned for mid-2021

Oct. 7 (UPI) — A private company handling NASA’s long-awaited return to the moon’s surface said its robotic Peregrine lander is on track for launch in the spring.

The lander project, which received funding from NASA, would become the first private, commercial mission to the moon, said Sharad Bhaskaran, mission director for Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic Technology.

The Peregrine mission is planned to help prepare for a 2024 crewed landing in NASA’s Artemis program. Astrobotic’s lead role in the lunar return follows its founding in 2007 by robotics research professor Red Whittaker at Carnegie Mellon University.

“We are trying to become the first to land an American spacecraft on the moon since Apollo,” Bhaskaran said Tuesday. “Within a few years, we want to fly Peregrine once every year or 18 months. We believe that is a credible plan.”

Astrobotic has a fixed-price contract from NASA of $79.5 million for the first Peregrine

Sarcos Defense Awarded Contract by U.S. Air Force to Develop “Smart” Dexterous Robotic Systems with Advanced Artificial Intelligence

Sarcos Defense, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarcos Robotics, today announced that the company has been awarded a contract by the Air Force Technology Acceleratory Program (AFWERX) to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) platform on behalf of Sarcos’ customer the Center for Rapid Innovation (CRI) at Air Force Research Labs (AFRL), that will enable human-scale dexterous robotic systems. This platform is based on the upper body of Sarcos’ innovative Guardian® XO® wearable exoskeleton robot, which can learn how to perform tasks with human-like movement through positive reinforcement and imitation machine learning (ML) technologies known as Cybernetic Training for Autonomous Robots (CYTAR). Unlike many of today’s AI platforms that are characterized by a trial and error approach, Sarcos’ AI system enables human operators to teach Sarcos’ robotic systems to perform tasks correctly the first time. Sarcos’ approach will significantly accelerate the speed and reduce the cost of deploying

Meet the UK robotic tech company making the 2020 elite London Marathon possible

The starting gun for the 2020 London Marathon will finally be fired this weekend, and it is down in large part to one British tech company’s device.

The major event will look nothing like it did in previous years.

Instead of competing along miles of tarmac, cheered on by stands packed with supporters, just 100 elite runners will be taking part in a collective marathon in the “secure biosphere environment” of a closed-loop circuit around St James’s Park, whilst more than 45,000 people will be completing their 26.2 mile route “virtually” this Sunday – running on their usual practice routes.

But it is still a big moment. The race will be the first major marathon to take place anywhere in the world since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, and as a result safety is a priority.
