Stan the T. rex just became the most expensive fossil ever sold

A 67 million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex specimen nicknamed Stan has just shattered a record; on Monday (Oct. 6), Stan was sold at Christie’s New York for nearly $32 million. That makes it the most expensive fossil ever sold at an auction.

Previously, the priciest fossil to hit the auction block was an incredibly complete T. rex known as Sue, which sold for $8.36 million in 1997 ($13.5 million in today’s dollars, given inflation) to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Meanwhile, the buyer of Stan has not been identified, according to The New York Times.

Many paleontologists are dismayed that Stan sold for so much to an unknown buyer, especially now that many scientific institutions don’t have the money to purchase such fossils and keep them in the public domain. However, unlike other dinosaur specimens, Stan had no choice but to go to the auction block, so

A Quarter of All Reptile Species, Many of Them Endangered, Are Sold Online | Science

Live reptiles are easy to buy online. Colombian redtail boas, Mt. Koghis Leachianus geckos, and even Southern New Guinea stream turtles, a species only known to science since 2015, can be bought with a few clicks. Some species are common; others are rare, unique to particular islands or hills. For many of these species, whether or not this mostly unregulated trade threatens their population in the wild is unknown.

A study published today in Nature Communications finds the scale of that online reptile trade is larger than previously thought, and that many reptile species are traded without protections from international regulations. After scraping the internet for data on reptiles for sale, the authors found that 3,943 reptile species—more than 35 percent of all reptile species—have been traded over the past 20 years, 2,754 of them online. “We were just overwhelmed by the sheer volume of species,” says Alice Hughes, an

Napster, the file-sharing business that devastated the music industry at the turn of the century, has been sold to UK technology company MelodyVR in a $70 million deal.

The acquisition from US company RealNetworks is the latest attempt to transform the famous tech boom brand, which was cofounded in 1999 by digital pioneer Sean Parker, who went on to be an early Facebook investor.

Having found fame as a website that allowed millions of people to share music illegally over the Internet, Napster was shut down in 2001 before being resurrected as a streaming platform.

MelodyVR streams virtual music concerts and events in conjunction with promoters including Live Nation. Chief executive Anthony Matchett told the Financial Times he was confident he could create a strong player in the music sector by combining its fledgling virtual live music business with Napster’s streaming operation.

“This acquisition puts us on a

Angela Lang/CNET

Apple introduced the new Apple Watch Series 6 (and cheaper Apple Watch SE) this week and they’re already open for business, with the watches available to buy now, with delivery in early October. Getting in line to buy the new watch at full price might be akin to setting your money on fire though, especially since now is the time we’ll start to see some deals on existing models. Case in point: Right now, Apple is offering the refurbished Apple Watch Nike Series 5 for $309

I’ve mentioned this before, but I will say it again: Despite the fact that Apple keeps the Series 3 around for discount pricing, I wouldn’t personally consider any Apple Watch prior to the Series 5 — the always-on display that first appeared in the Series 5 is absolutely essential in my book. Veritable table stakes. If you agree, here’s your chance
