As we move deeper into the pandemic, companies are realizing that the remote work habits that are de facto today will likely persist to become a major part of the way they work in the post-COVID world. Technology will play a big role in this new environment, but the way companies rebuild themselves around the technology may be even more important.

That was the topic of discussion at one round table during Fast Company‘s Impact Council annual meeting on June 30. The panel, moderated by Fast Company technology editor Harry McCracken, included Box CEO Aaron Levie, Visible CEO Miguel Quiroga, Threshold Ventures partner Heidi Roizen, Infoblox CEO Jesper Andersen, Pfizer chief digital and technology officer Lidia Fonseca, Emerald One CEO Laverne Council, and Vince Campisi of Raytheon Technologies.

Apple is starting to ship devices directly from its stores

Apple is shifting how it ships devices to consumers: instead of sending out all of its hardware products directly from China or from local warehouses, the company is now going to use its network of Apple Stores as de-facto fulfillment centers, shipping products directly from the stores to get to customers faster.

The change, Bloomberg reports, will use Apple’s nearly 300 stores in the US and Canada to speed up local delivery for customers within 100 miles of a store. The company has already apparently started using the new system with several stores earlier this year, but the broader rollout is coming just ahead of Apple’s upcoming iPhone launch next week (which is already taking place later than usual).

Several other factors related to fertility and pregnancy also seem to be associated with subsequent cardiovascular disease, say the researchers, including starting periods early, use of combined oral contraceptives, polycystic ovary syndrome, and early menopause.

However, a longer length of breastfeeding was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Previous research has suggested that risk factors specific to women may be linked to cardiovascular disease and stroke, but clarity on the quality of the evidence is lacking and on how the findings can be translated into public health and clinical practice.

Google to Collect 30% Cut on In-App Purchases Starting in 2021

Taking a page out of Apple’s  (AAPL) – Get Report book, Google will begin more strictly enforcing rules that require developers to use Google’s  (GOOGL) – Get Report payment system for in-app purchases. 

Google announced the change on its Android developer blog on Monday, describing it as a clarification of Google’s existing rules on in-app purchases. Google had an existing policy requiring developers to use Google’s billing system, but the policy had been loosely enforced. 

“We’ve always required developers who distribute their apps on Play to use Google Play’s billing system if they offer in-app purchases of digital goods, and pay a service fee from a percentage of the purchase,” wrote Sameer Samat, VP of product management at Android. “We only collect a service fee if the developer charges users to download their app or they sell in-app digital items, and we think that is fair.

Virginia Tech starting QB Hendon Hooker, 22 others out tonight against NC State

Virginia Tech starting quarterback Hendon Hooker was one of 23 players who will not play tonight versus N.C. State.

Just before kickoff, it was announced in the pressbox that the players, as well as two assistant coaches, would not be available for their opener against the Wolfpack.

Virginia Tech has had two games postponed because of COVID-19 outbreaks within its football program. Earlier this week, head coach Justin Fuente told the press he didn’t know if he would have an entire roster against N.C. State.

Hooker, a Greensboro native, is a big loss for the offense. The redshirt junior led the team in total offense (1,911 yards) and had 18 touchdowns a year ago.

Other players missing from the offense will be Darryle Simmons, Peyton Kemmerlin, Terius Wheatley, Keshawn King, Jalen Hampton, Nikia Peerman, Silas Dzansi, T.J. Jackson, Dallan Wright, Jaden Payoute, Elijah Bowick and Conner Dusenbury.

GitHub to replace ‘master’ with ‘main’ starting next month

Starting next month, all new source code repositories created on GitHub will be named “main” instead of “master” as part of the company’s effort to remove unnecessary references to slavery and replace them with more inclusive terms.

GitHub repositories are where users and companies store and synchronize their source code projects.

By default, GitHub uses the term “master” for the primary version of a source code repository. Developers make copies of the “master” on their computers into which they add their own code, and then merge the changes back into the “master” repo.

“On October 1, 2020, any new repositories you create will use main as the default branch, instead of master,” the company said.

Existing repositories that have “master” set as the default branch will be left as is.
