China’s two largest games live streaming companies Huya and DouYu, both of which have U.S. share listings, are to merge. The deal was initiated by social media, games and streaming giant Tencent.
According to terms published on Monday, the shareholders of the two companies will come out roughly equal, and Huya will make an all stock offer for the shares of DouYu. Reuters calculates that DouYu is valued at $6 billion by the deal terms.
Huya CEO Dong Rongjie and his DouYu’s Chen Shaojie, will be co-CEOs of the combined company.
At the same time, it has also been agreed that Tencent will sell its own game live streaming business Penguin eSports for $500 million, after the Huya-DouYu deal is completed. That will enable a three-way consolidation of the sector.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Cisco has signed up Britain’s biggest telecoms group BT as its first customer for a new service to speed up internet video traffic through its networks as the coronavirus crisis pushes up demand for video streaming.
The new service, developed with U.S. cloud platform company Qwilt, helps telecom operators to build their own content delivery infrastructure to increase streaming quality, reduce cost, allow more control over content flows and add a revenue source.

At the same time, while the overall audience for livestreaming has shrunk slightly from its all-time high back in April, Twitch’s popularity has nonetheless exploded during the pandemic, with nearly double the audience that it had at this time last year.
Independent data analyses in the streaming market focus on tracking hours watched to indicate a platform’s popularity with its audience. But this is just the start of Microsoft’s plans for streaming, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has indicated in a tweet that streaming will make its way to Game Pass on Xbox and PC, too.

Activist investor Daniel Loeb on Wednesday urged Walt Disney Co. to skip paying an annual dividend and instead pour the $3 billion into hits for its streaming television service.
Loeb, founder of Third Point hedge fund, made his pitch in a letter to Disney chief executive Bob Chapek and the board of directors.
Loeb reasoned that skipping a few dollars per share in dividends, the entertainment giant could use the money to more than double its budget for content at Disney+ streaming service.
“Disney has built one of the largest streaming platforms in the world, already within the original 5-year Disney+ subscriber target range of 60-90 million,” Loeb said in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

Earlier this year, Microsoft added Project xCloud gaming streaming to Xbox Game Pass. That roll out came after a long alpha testing period, but even though game streaming is part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate package, it’s only available on Android devices. Given Apple’s rules regarding App Store distribution, it’s safe to say that game streaming won’t be coming to iOS anytime soon, but what about other platforms like Xbox One and PC?
It’s a good question, because Microsoft has talked about platform-agnostic game streaming plenty of times in the past. As it turns out, this current focus on Android doesn’t necessarily mean that mobile streaming is going to be the only option from here on out. In fact, in a new tweet, Xbox chief Phil Spencer says that streaming to Xbox and PC is something that Microsoft wants to pursue in the future.
Global online music streaming revenues declined 2% QoQ but grew 13% YoY in Q2 2020 at $6.7 billion, according to the latest Counterpoint Research findings.
