For every two deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the U.S., a third American dies as a result of the pandemic, according to new data publishing Oct. 12 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study, led by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University, shows that deaths between March 1 and Aug. 1 increased 20% compared to previous years — maybe not surprising in a pandemic. But deaths attributed to COVID-19 only accounted for 67% of those deaths.
“Contrary to skeptics who claim that COVID-19 deaths are fake or that the numbers are much smaller than we hear on the news, our research and many other studies on the same subject show quite the opposite,” said lead author Steven Woolf, M.D., director emeritus of VCU’s Center on Society and Health.
The study also contains suggestive evidence that state policies on reopening early in April and May may have fueled the
A large wildcat resembling a leopard was recently photographed by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service trail camera in Texas.
The nighttime image was shared Saturday on Facebook, showing the “majestic feline” as it was creeping into a highway underpass, used by wildlife to avoid traffic.
Though the spotted wildcat looks alarmingly like a leopard — particularly in black and white — experts have identified it as an ocelot, a native species of wild feline that grows to 4 feet in length and 35 pounds. (Leopards grow to more than 6 feet and 130 pounds, LiveScience.com reports.)
To say the species is rare in the U.S. is an understatement.
“There are an estimated 50 ocelots that remain in the United States,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials say. “Known as the ‘little leopard,’ ocelots are larger than a house cat but smaller than a bobcat.”
This endangered and elusive wildcat was recently spotted using a wildlife underpass in Texas. It’s an ocelot and there are fewer than 50 living in the wild in the nation.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — With an offense that did just about whatever it wanted and a defense that was dominant deep into the game, No. 24 Iowa State put away Texas Tech to get out to its best start in Big 12 play in 18 years.
Brock Purdy passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns, Breece Hall rushed for 135 yards and two scores, and the Cyclones won 31-15 Saturday for their fifth straight win over the Red Raiders.
Iowa State remained tied with Kansas State atop the Big 12 standings and have won three straight to open conference play for the first time since 2002 and only the second time since 1950.
It was Iowa State’s most complete performance this season, but coach Matt Campbell said there is plenty to clean up before the Cyclones (3-1, 3-0 Big 12) head to No. 10 Oklahoma State after an open date
Iowa State coach Matt Campbell’s message never changes. He’s the same after a win or a loss. Never too high. Never too low

Thirty minutes down in Ames, and Iowa State leads Texas Tech, 21-7, at halftime.
The Cyclones have been pretty well dominant in their first game back since defeating Oklahoma last week as they try to stay undefeated in Big 12 play.
Here are the big takeaways from the first half:
Iowa State is making a statement
Beating Oklahoma was a huge accomplishment for the Cyclones, but it would have been worth a lot less if they didn’t back it up with a win this weekend against Texas Tech.
The Cyclones aren’t there yet, but they’ve been head and shoulders better than the Red Raiders. It’s exactly what a Big 12 title contender should look like.

Tesla may be planning to build batteries at its forthcoming Texas factory.
In documents filed to the state’s Commission on Environmental Quality, the company mentions a proposal for cell production.
Last month, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla found new innovations to bring down the cost of producing batteries while integrating them inside of its cars more efficiently.

Tesla may be planning to build battery cells alongside Cybertrucks and other vehicles at its newest factory, set to open in 2021.
Documents filed with the state’s Commission on Environmental Quality, first reported by the Austin Business Journal, cite battery cell manufacturing among activities to occur at the 2,100-acre site near Austin.
“The facility is proposing to operate a cell-manufacturing unit to produce the battery packs that are installed in the vehicle,” one of the permit applications first spotted by Bloomberg says.
Tesla (TSLA) – Get Report won’t only be assembling the Cybertruck at its new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, when it turns on the switch next year: The company also plans to mass-produce batteries.
Tesla has filed documents with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality seeking permission to operate a “cell-manufacturing unit” at what it calls Tesla Giga Austin.
According to a 188-page air-quality permit application filed sometime between July and last month, Tesla is proposing “to operate a cell-manufacturing unit to produce the battery packs that are installed in the vehicle.”
GHD Services, which reportedly submitted the registration on Tesla’s behalf, said in the application that six nitrogen-blanketed tanks, each with a volume of 20,000 liters, will be necessary to manufacture the cells, according to reports.
The environmental permit application was first reported by the Austin Business Journal.
