Opposition describes the occasion marked by the sun, Earth and Mars all lining up perfectly. Earth is in the middle, so the sun is on one side while Mars is on the other. That means Mars will be at the opposite point in the sky, above the horizon after the sun has set.
It also means Mars will appear fully illuminated from the vantage point of Earth-dwellers, causing it to appear especially bright.
Where to look
Mars was closest to Earth a week ago on Oct. 6, in fact the closest in 15 years, but appears more brilliant Tuesday night. That’s because it’s in a better position to reflect more sunlight back at us. Last week, it was doing so at a slanted angle, acutely diminishing its apparent magnitude.
If you’re looking to catch Mars at its most effulgent, all you have to do is look east an hour or
Oct. 13 (UPI) — Apple is expected to announce its first 5G-compatible iPhone during a highly anticipated digital event on Tuesday.
The company has teased the event with the tagline “Hi, Speed” ahead of the event, scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
The announcement is expected to come in a pre-recorded video from Apple Park featuring CEO Tim Cook and other executives providing a look at the company’s latest smartphone lineup.
The new device, which would be the iPhone 12, is expected to come in four different models with display sizes ranging from 5.4 inches to 6.7 inches. The retail cost is rumored to begin at $700 and rise to $1,100 for the top-end model.
Apple is also rumored to be developing two new wireless chargers that could release alongside the new phones, after the company canceled its AirPower charger last year.
2020TN3 is expected to be three times as big as the Statue of Liberty in New York
A total of three Near-Earth Asteroids (NEA) are expected to pass by the planet this Tuesday in varying times, the same day when Mars will be in opposition. One of the NEAs to zip by is three times the size of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
The first of the three to zip past Earth on Tuesday is also the largest. 2020TN3 is about 278 ft in diameter and is expected to zip by early in the morning, at 5:12 a.m. EDT. The giant asteroid will be three times the size of the Statue of Liberty. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies claims the NEA will be flying by

The new autopilot software will be available to a small pool of Tesla owners
The updated FSD software is expected to include many new functionalities
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter on Monday that the company’s autopilot self-driving mode would be made available in a small beta test starting next week.
The closed beta-test system, which will be limited to a small pool of “expert and careful drivers,” will roll out next week, Car And Driver reported.
The Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature has undergone a complete reboot and is expected to carry a lot of new functionality. The rewrite also updated the autopilot’s labeling software to enable it to interpret the environment in 4D instead of 2D.
Based on Musk’s recent descriptions, the updated software will build on its current “traffic light

Space fans have been starved for action lately, with three big missions repeatedly scrubbed and postponed over the past several weeks. But early on Tuesday, SpaceX finally ended the streak that became known as #Scrubtober (and previously known as #Scrubtember) with the launch and deployment of 60 new Starlink satellites via a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral.
This Starlink mission was the Falcon 9 rocket booster’s third flight overall. It sent astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to orbit in May and then launched a South Korean satellite in July. So far, SpaceX has managed to launch and land the same rocket up to six times.
The Falcon 9 first stage landed again on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You in the Atlantic about 8.5 minutes after launch Tuesday. SpaceX also reports that it caught at least
Forget Halloween. This October is all about the glory of Mars, as the glimmering red planet puts on a show in the night sky. You can enjoy Mars as a bright point of light all month long, but there are two special dates to mark on your calendar: Oct. 6 when the planet makes a close approach to Earth, and Oct. 13, when it will be in opposition.
Mars has a reputation as the “red” planet, but its color in the night sky is a little more on the Halloween side of the spectrum. It appears as a bright orange-red dot to the naked eye, like a little spot of glittering rust.
