Army partners with University of Illinois on autonomous drone swarm technology

Army researchers are working with the University of Illinois Chicago on unmanned technology for recharging drone swarms.

The university has been awarded a four-year, $8 million cooperative agreement “to develop foundational science in two critical propulsion and power technology areas for powering future families of unmanned aircraft systems,” according to a statement released by the Army Research Laboratory.

“This collaborative program will help small battery-powered drones autonomously return from military missions to unmanned ground vehicles for recharging,” the Army added. “The university is developing algorithms to enable route planning for multiple teams of small unmanned air and ground vehicles.”

Missouri University Of Science And Technology Receives $300 Million Gift, The Largest In Missouri Higher Education History

University of Nottingham Ningbo China Scholar Earns Patent for Intellectual Property Protection in 3D Printing

Hing Kai Chan, Professor of Operations Management at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), and his team recently gained authorisation from the National Intellectual Property Office for the patent “Digital watermarking method for 3D printing models”. The new patent tracks and protects intellectual property in 3D printing.

“The toughest problem in 3D printing is not technology, but the protection of intellectual property,” Professor Chan introduces. At present, the anti-counterfeiting of 3D printing model is mainly achieved by embedding digital watermark into triangular mesh data, but not all the model files are in triangular mesh format, and the embedded digital watermark may be lost in printing and manufacturing.

Science vs humanities in Australia’s university fee shake-up | Australia

Canberra, Australia – University students enrolling in degrees in the humanities, law and economics in Australia will see their course fees more than double next year under legislation that has just passed the upper house which the government says will ensure higher education produces “job-ready graduates”.

Under the plan, a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree will cost as much as 58,000 Australian dollars ($41,619) from 2021, an increase of 113 percent compared with 2020.

The bill passed the Senate on Thursday after securing the votes of minority parties, all but guaranteeing it will become law when it returns to the lower house in a week or so.

Davenport University earns $650k in scholarships for 20 Computer Science majors with a new National Science Foundation Grant

LANSING, Mich. — Davenport University, the beneficiary of 3 National Science Foundation grants in 3 years, has been awarded a new S-STEM grant for $647,527 to recruit, retain, graduate, and prepare 20 low-income, academically talented students earning a B.S. in Computer Information Systems (CIS) or Computer Science (CS) for employment.

Over the next five years, twelve students will enter as freshmen and receive scholarship support for four years, and eight transfer students will enter as juniors and receive scholarships for two years. Using a cohort-based model, Davenport will utilize flexible delivery of courses and mentoring to a­­ssist and promote success for students who have intermittent external conflicts that pose barriers to consistent in-person attendance.

S-STEM scholars will receive an average of $7,000 annually, not to exceed unmet need. The scholarships funds are applied towards their two or four-year tuition costs for a total savings of between $14,000 and $28,000, respectively.

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University Utilizes AMD EPYC Processors for Scientific Research
